She shared, “For the first four to five years of my career, I often found myself playing similar roles across films.

The dialogues were usually the same, with only the co-actors, costumes, and settings changing, but the essence of the roles remained unchanged. Back then, it was common for us to work on 30 movies a year and it was easy because the role was the same. But with time, I felt the need to challenge myself and break away from these repetitive roles as I wanted to grow as an actor. That’s when I decided to take on more intense roles and I took up ‘Shool.’

Talking about how challenging it was for her to bag the role in ‘Shool’, Raveena shared, “Ram Gopal Verma ji, who is now a dear friend, was producing the film, and the director of the film, Eeshwar Nivas, was convinced that I could play Manjari Bhabhi. But Ram Gopal Verma ji didn’t agree and he initially discouraged me from taking on such a demanding role as he had a certain image in his mind about me, owing to my previous roles.

However, I saw it as an opportunity to push my limit, so I went ahead with it. I remember the day that I had a look test for the film and while I was going for it, I greeted Ramu with a cheerful ‘Hi,’ but he just smiled, responded with a quick ‘Hi,’ and walked away. I was taken aback by his reaction as I felt that he didn’t want me to do this film. I didn’t let that affect me and I went ahead for the look test and I was soon fully immersed in my character.

At that moment, he turned around and asked me, “Raveena Tandon, is that you?”. He didn’t recognize me because I was so deeply immersed into the character. That moment was a turning point for me—I never looked back after that, and people began to accept me in diverse roles.”
